Making Kindness Rocks
How to Find a ROCK:
Take a walk on a dirt road on the shoreline, or any spot where you know there will be lots of rocks!
I think the rocks “speak” to us…” Pick Me!! Pick Me!!!!” Select a rock that YOU think is perfect. Maybe you are drawn to its size, shape, or color, or perhaps it is a shape that reminds you of a fish, a heart, a kite, or even an ice cream cone! Put the rock in your pocket and take it home. It’s not uncommon to pick up more than one!
When you get back home, wash the rock to remove any dirt, etc. Dry it.
Use a white exterior latex primer to paint the rock all over. You do not have to use a primer, but it reduces the amount of actual paint applied. If you use a spray can of paint it goes a bit quicker!
Now you are ready for your base coat. Look at the rock and choose a color that fits it! Paint one side! Let it dry completely. Then paint the other side. Here’s where the fun begins! Look at the rock and decide what you would like the rock to say, “Be Kind”, “Have a Happy Day”, “Smile”, “You Rock“, or what comes to mind for you! You can write words on the rock with paint or a permanent magic marker. You can also have fun painting a design; a heart, a flower, an animal, whatever you want. If you make a huge mistake, just paint the rock over and start again!
After the rock(s) dry, you can use a spray exterior polyurethane to seal the rock on all sides. Let the rock dry and spray it a few times…3 or 4. This extra protection will keep the rock safe from outside weather. You can also use Modge-Podge to seal the rocks. This painting process with Modge-Podge is a little more time-consuming but works out great just the same.
Bring your rock to the garden and place it on an available slate marker stone!
